Historic Moment: Cardinal Robert Prevost Becomes Pope Leo XIV

On May 8, 2025, Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost was elected as the 267th pope of the Roman Catholic Church, taking the name Pope Leo XIV. This marks a historic milestone as he becomes the first American-born pope and the first pontiff from the Order of Saint Augustine.

Born in Chicago in 1955, Pope Leo XIV has dedicated much of his life to missionary work, particularly in Peru, where he served as Bishop of Chiclayo and holds dual citizenship. His deep pastoral experience and commitment to social justice reflect the values championed by his predecessor, Pope Francis.

In his first public address from the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica, Pope Leo XIV greeted the world with the words, “Peace be with all of you,” emphasizing themes of unity, humility, and hope. He expressed a desire to continue building bridges across cultures and faiths, reinforcing the Church’s mission of compassion and dialogue.

His election has been met with widespread celebration, particularly in the United States and Latin America, symbolizing a new chapter in the Church’s global outreach.

A Heartfelt Congratulations

We extend our warmest congratulations to Pope Leo XIV on his election. May his leadership inspire peace, compassion, and unity across the globe. As he embarks on this sacred journey, we pray for his strength and wisdom in guiding the Church through the challenges of our time.
